Frequently Asked Questions
Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows outside the uterus. This tissue can affect areas such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and the lining of the pelvis, and may contribute to painful periods, pelvic pain, and fertility difficulties.
Symptoms vary widely from person to person, and the severity of symptoms does not always reflect how extensive the condition is. With the right diagnosis and treatment, many women experience significant improvement in their symptoms and quality of life.
Adenomyosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows into the muscle of the uterus. This can cause the womb to become enlarged and may lead to heavy periods, painful periods, pelvic pressure, and ongoing discomfort.
Symptoms can vary from person to person, and some women have very mild symptoms while others are more significantly affected. With the right diagnosis and treatment, many women experience substantial improvement in their symptoms and quality of life.
Endometriosis and adenomyosis can cause a wide range of symptoms, which may vary significantly from person to person.
Common symptoms include:
- Painful periods
- Heavy menstrual bleeding
- Pelvic pain between periods
- Pain during sex
- Bloating and bowel symptoms
- Fatigue
- Difficulty conceiving
Some women have mild symptoms, while others find that their symptoms have a significant impact on daily life. With the right diagnosis and treatment, many women experience substantial improvement and feel much more in control.
Diagnosis begins with a detailed discussion of your symptoms, menstrual history, and medical background.
Adenomyosis is often identified on a specialist pelvic ultrasound and, in some cases, an MRI scan.
Endometriosis can sometimes be seen on ultrasound, particularly when ovarian cysts (endometriomas) or deeper disease are present. We also offer the Ziwig Endotest®, a saliva-based test that can help support the diagnosis of endometriosis in selected cases.
Some women may have normal scans despite significant symptoms, so diagnosis is often based on a combination of symptoms, examination findings, and imaging. In certain cases, laparoscopy may be recommended to confirm the diagnosis.
A careful clinical assessment is essential to ensure the right diagnosis and treatment plan.
Treatment is tailored to your symptoms, the severity of your condition, and your fertility goals.
Options may include:
- Pain relief
- Hormonal treatments to reduce symptoms
- Lifestyle and nutritional support
- Iron replacement for heavy bleeding
- Specialist surgery where appropriate
- Fertility support when pregnancy is desired
With the right treatment plan, many women experience significant improvement in pain, bleeding, and overall quality of life.
