Coil Insertion

A coil could be right for you if you have had a previous difficult coil insertion; if you have had previous procedures to the cervix or if you have a retroverted womb, as well as more.

Gentle, Guided Coil Fitting with Your Comfort in Mind

Whether you are choosing a coil for contraception or to help manage heavy periods, we offer ultrasound-guided coil insertion to make the procedure as comfortable as possible.

We use real-time ultrasound to ensure accurate placement and can provide local anaesthetic, gas and air, or Penthrox® if needed for additional pain relief.

Frequently Asked Questions

Could a Coil Be Right for Me?

A coil can be an excellent option for both contraception and the treatment of heavy or painful periods.

Ultrasound-guided insertion can be particularly helpful if you have had a previous difficult coil fitting, a caesarean section, cervical treatment, or a retroverted womb (a womb that tilts backwards). In these situations, real-time ultrasound helps us visualise the uterus and ensure the coil is positioned accurately.

We tailor pain relief to your needs and can offer local anaesthetic, gas and air (Entonox), and Penthrox® to make the procedure as comfortable as possible.

What happens during an ultrasound guided coil insertion?

Your appointment begins with a consultation to confirm that the coil is the right option for you. During the procedure, a transvaginal ultrasound scan is performed to guide the insertion and confirm the coil is positioned correctly.

The procedure usually takes around 20–30 minutes.

What Pain Relief Is Offered?

We offer a range of pain relief options depending on your needs and previous experiences. This may include local anaesthetic, gas and air (Entonox), and Penthrox®.

Our aim is to make your coil fitting as comfortable and stress-free as possible.

What happens after the appointment?

It is normal to experience mild cramping and light bleeding for a few days after insertion. Most women are able to return to normal activities the same day.

We will provide detailed aftercare advice, explain when your coil becomes effective, and let you know when to seek medical advice if you have any concerns.
